Fun & games at the December HGC Meeting.


Members were each given a Christmas present of a head messager and it was obviously enjoyed by all.
NOVEMBER
This month's activities began with the HGC Rummage Sale on Nov 4th.
L to R Bettie Edlemen, Terri Wolfe & Loy Hosea cooked a wonderful lunch that could be bought by volunteers and customers.

Then on the 8th our President, Cara Martin gave her presidents speech at the 54th Annual Southern Zone Fall Meeting.
Nine members attended. Three of our group displayed designs for the convention.

Some of our members hosted and attended the 19th Annual Methodist Womens Fashion Show and Luncheon.

Maynard Wilson presented the Blue Mahoe Tree for the plant of the month. All of these leaves have come off the same tree.

Nell Anderson showed and explained her Framed Spatial Design for her design tip of the month. Made of dried, treated and contrived materials, it hung inside the frame, affixed with wire or fishing line. This will be a new category in our Annual Flower Show.

Judith Bussey, from Newton Garden Club was our guest speaker. Mrs. Bussey is a nationally accredited NGC Flower Show Judge and she and her husband Dr. Bussey are avid collectors of Bamboo. Judith presented a very informative program on the many used of bamboo, from design to clothing.


Yipee
Several HGC and community volunteers formed the SCRC which after three years of hard work have finally sold their first load of recycled cardboard. The check is in the mail and the monies will be returned to the community in the form of a donation.

On October 4, 2011, The Sabine County Recycling Committee (SCRC) was presented the "Volunteer of the Year" award for the state of Texas from the State of Texas Alliance For Recycling. In attendence for the ceremony were HGC members (pictured below) L to R
Gini Huffman, Jack Hennigan and Katherine Knight.
All are members of SCRC as well.
Three HGC members that were instrumental in getting the recycling effort in Hemphill started are and were Vickie Wigham, Edna Cambell & Rhoda Berry (the last two ladies recently deceased). They were missed.

Sixteen HGC members met in Tyler on October 7 to tour the Rose Gardens and visit the Museum. We had a wonderful time and can't wait for the next trip.


A busy 2nd Thursday for this month. Community Concerns met and made wreaths and the Jr. Garden Club met for a program about "Bats" Everyone at both events had a great time.

Authoritative Speaker, Tina Jerge presented a program on "Draught Tolerant Native Plants" As we are in a sever draught this program was very timely and informative.
Jacki presented an environmental minute by reminding us what to put in our composters to assure we have success and then she showed us some sun catchers that were made from recycled materials. What a gal.

SEPTEMBER

JUNE

For 18 years, HGC has sponsored the Merchants Scarecrow Contest in observance of National Garden Week. Rhoda Berry was instrumental in organizing this activity and since she passed away last June, the merchants in town decided to sponsor the contest themselves. What a great tribute to Rhoda. HGC will instead be hosting a Gardeners Produce Exchange and Tour of HGC's gardens on Thursday June 9, 2011 from 10:00am -12:00pm. Please come join us and bring your extra produce and tour the gardens and receive a free gift courtesy of HGC.

Loy Hosea, Judy Price and Maynard Wilson were at the courthouse steps to celebrate Memorial Day. Afterwards, Loy and Judy hung the HGC wreath at the Blue Star Memorial. Thanks ladies.

Arbor Day Activities for April


Members of the Arbor Day Committee first meet with the mayor for Proclamation signing and then plant a Star Magnolia at the Library in honor of Rhoda Berry.
MARCH
Once again, Bob Baker from TPW presented a great program for the Jr. Garden Club. This month the program was about Bats. The children and adults had a great time.


Our monthly meeting was hosted by Shorty Warren and Deb Smith

Kathy Kercheval stopped by to explain a fund raiser for Breast Cancer. Sounds like a lot of fun. Decorating Bras.

Maynard Wilson presented the plant of the month. Michela yunannsis.


Nell Anderson showed us how to do a Horizontal Design which was our design tip for the month.


Our Featured Speaker was Stephen Kovatch from Orange, TX.
He presented a very informative program on "Fruit and Citrus Trees." He also happens to be the eldest son of HGC member, Loy Hosea. Can you tell!


FEBRUARY
Jr. Garden Club had a great program about Snakes presented by Bob Baker from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The kids had a great time and are looking forward to Bob returning next month to talk about Bats.


February Monthly HGC Meeting

Hostesses for this month are Vicki Whigham, Terri Wolfe and Linda Prince.
Cecil Hunt from Lufkin, TX gave an energetic and informative program on The Magnificent Honeybee.

After the meeting several of the HGC ladies went over to the library to set up the annual Arbor Day Exhibit.

Master Gardener and former HGC member, Bobbie Bounds helped the High School Garden Club prepare their entries for the HGC Annual Flower Show.


Also in February HGC member Shorty Warren gave a brief course in Street Survival. This class was open to the public and we are hoping he will continue with this exciting addition to the HGC Calendar.

Several HGC members met to pot 400 trees to sell as a fundraiser for the club. The 5 gallon pots and dirt were all donated by member Mary Ann McDaniel.

The Jr. Garden Club kicked off the Arbor Season with it's annual "What Tree Am I?" Program.

We begin this month with the Lion's Club Annual Christmas Parade and the decorating of the HGC float featuring selected members of the Jr. Garden Club.

The club members start out the month of November with great creativity and energy. Thursday and Friday are dedicated to the setting up and operating the Country Store. Members offer their crafts, baked goods, plants and lagniappe for sale as one of our yearly fundraisers. All proceeds go towards our High School Scholarships.

Two of our members who modeled are Edna and Vicki. Another member, Katherine worked in the kitchen, welcomed guests and worked crowd control.

On the 18th several members decorated the stage at Milam Settlers Day. They did a wonderful job. Thanks to Jason & Gini Huffman, Cara Martin, Loretta Sterle, Pam Sykes and Shorty Warren.

Carol Moore was the Authoritative Speaker for this month and she presented a wonderful slide show on "Old Designs of Courthouses in Texas.

Design tip of the month (Rhythm) was presented by Iris.
After the meeting some of the members went over to Milam to work the HGC Nut & Quilt Raffle Booth.


OCTOBER
The TGC Fall Convention was held in Tyler this year and these ladies were in attendance, with their hats as the theme for this fall was "Hat's Off To Roses." I looks like Cara didn't get the memo.

The High School Garden club was presented a program by HGC member Shorty Warren on Bonsai.
Hostesses for the October monthly meeting were Lucy Buenger, Jacki Hennigan & Rose Powell.
Iris Mitchell and Nell Anderson presented the "10 Minute Design Tip for the flower show and Nell presented the "The Featured Plant" which was a spectacular ginger.
Judy Price presented a Memorial Book in honor of Pam Sykes mother.
All committee chairwomen spoke, Gini Huffman gave the environmental minute and Judy Price gave the National Gardener excerpt.
Our Program for the month was presented by Mary Wood on the Texas Bottle Bill 2011. Fantastic power point program on the recycling of plastic bottles and she urged all of us to write/call our State Senators and Congressmen to show our support for this much needed legislation.
The Jr. Garden Club got into a program on recycling. Gini Huffman, Janis Speights, Loy Hosea and Cara Martin ask their classes "which of these items can be recycled?"
Gini asks "Who wants to win a keyboard?" and "Who wants to win a karaoke machine?"
After the rules for the "Recycling Contest" are explained Cara has some definite interest in her class.
The Community Concerns Committee was in full force at the Hemphill Care Center where the residents made fall tree pictures by gluing leaf cut outs and pumpkins onto a water color background.

We had a great work day on the 5th. Lots of helpers showed up and the yard looks great. Thanks to everyone that came and helped.

All of Cara's hard work during the summer paid off. She sprayed and pulled morning glory vines that were strangling our roses. Gini Huffman is now helping spread more mulch over recycled newspaper to make sure our guys will stay happy during the winter months.
September Monthly Meeting
We were happy to see all our members and several visitors as our first meeting was a memorial to Freda Batson and Rhoda Berry, two dear members who passed away this year.
Freda's daughter - in -law read an emotional eulogy written by Freda's daughter and several other club members and friends eulogized Rhoda.

On Thursday September 9, The Community Concerns Committee helped the residents of the Hemphill Care Center make Nature Frames.
